What is it?

Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) provides a comprehensive tool for change and configuration management for Microsoft Windows 7/10 platforms. It enables the organization to push out relevant operating systems, applications, and updates to Windows users quickly and within a cost-effective manor.

Many Windows users already take advantage of automated tools like Windows Update to keep their systems up-to-date. SCCM allows technical staff to assure that every Windows system managed on the CIT network stays current.

This protects each individual device from exploitation of software vulnerabilities and improves overall network security for CIT.

What information does Configuration Manager collect?

The CIT implementation of Configuration Manager has been customized to collect only the data needed to support computers running a Microsoft Windows operating system. This information includes:

  • Hardware Specification
  • Installed Applications & Usage
  • Services Running
  • Available Software Updates
  • Local User Accounts and Login/Logout Timestamps
  • Security Status (Firewall, SSH, etc)
  • Connected Peripheral Devices

No personal information is collected, such as the contents or names of personal files (documents, email, etc) or any browsing history.

What devices does Configuration Manager support?

CIT System Center Configuration Manager supports all recent versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 and now Windows Server 2016.

What is Software Center?

The Software Center application is similar in a way to a mobile device app store (such as Google Play or the Apple App Store), but it provides customized content for CIT Windows devices. This content includes access to Institute approved software, maintenance task scheduling, support options, and other documentation. The Software Center gives end users the flexibility of choosing what to install and when to install it.

The Software Center is managed and maintained by IT Services. If you would like to see something added, please submit a ticket here

What changes does the installation of Configuration Manager make to a PC?

Configuration Manager installs an agent to your PC. The agent runs in the background and will not interfere with the operation of your device. Additionally, Configuration Manager installs the Software Center application and the Configuration Manager control panel object.

Who has access to the collected information?

Only authorised CIT IT personnel in line with CIT policies and whose role requires it will be able to access the data stored in the CIT SCCM Databases.

Can I connect to Software Center when I am off-campus?

For Software Center to function, the device must be on the Institute network or connected by VPN.
